Mumbai, Sept 28: Flambouyant fashion designer Rohit (Gudda) Bal has finally confessed that he’s gay and has professed his love for boyfriend Lalit Tehlan, who is a model. In an exclusive interview given to a news daily, Bal said “I have found someone who loves me more than I love him. I don't walk any more. I float.” When asked who the lucky person was, Bal gushed “His name is Lalit Tehlan. He is a model and is good looking. He was going to be a part of an airline. Then we met and we realised we can fly higher together. It was love at first sight. Jab pyar kiya toh darna kya.” In the candid chit-chat, the designer said that his favourite clothes were jeans, shirts and cowboy shoes but he also liked to wear his boyfriend. Love for Rohit is- “Something that is difficult to come by. It's the most incredible gift from God to mankind. Most people compromise and many lose it too. I would say it's a spirited bird you cannot catch. And those who can hold onto it are the luckiest.” The designer accepted that every inch of him is romantic. Gudda, who has been pretty open about his sexual preferences since long, has never given an interview of this sort, though people close to him always knew of his sexual orientation. “Why shouldn't I be open? I think closet people are really very sad. In the day and time we are living, I don't think anyone gives a damn about your sexuality. No one cares whom you spend your nights with. And frankly, I have no control over my likes or dislikes. God made me like this. What I do in my bedroom has nothing to do with my abilities as a designer. When people say, 'Oh God, theek ho jayega', it's not diabetes that a person will get cured with medication. If you don't come out of the closet, you will never be happy. You can't be born a cat and act like a dog. …Yes, we're talking about the love saga of one of India's top fashion designers Rohit Bal and his 23-year-old boyfriend Lalit Tehlan, a fresh face on the ramp.
…It was love at first sight for Rohit but for model Lalit, love blossomed much later, as the couple got closer. And irrespective of gender, sparks flew, they fell in love and now they live happily.
In a candid interview, the dynamic duo spoke to us about their strong bond.
Love at first sight!
Their first meeting wasn't planned so it wasn't the clichéd ‘common friends introduced us’ kind of meeting. The couple met when Lalit was modelling for a show organised by his friends at National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).
Recalling his first interaction with Rohit (Gudda), he says, "When I walked the ramp, I wasn't aware that Gudda was the chief guest at that event. After the show, Gudda came to me and said, ‘What are you doing here? You should be somewhere else!’ - after which he asked me if I was a model."
Lalit explained to Rohit that this was just a one-off thing and that he hailed from a very conservative background and so was not too keen to take up modelling. "Gudda then convinced me and also came to my house the next day and spoke to my parents.
He persuaded my parents and that's how I entered the modelling industry. Gudda trained me. He also told me everything about modelling. He taught me how to walk and also made me lose weight. After my grooming sessions with Gudda, I started my stint as a ramp model. I have been modelling for almost a year now," reveals Lalit.
He adds, “Honestly, there was nothing in the beginning between us. But everything happened slowly and gradually. After sometime, I moved into Rohit's house and we started living together. It all happened slowly and steadily, not instantly. In fact, it is still evolving."
Diverse Backgrounds
What about Lalit's parents? Lalit had earlier said that he belonged to a conservative Jat family from Haryana, though he was born and brought up in Delhi. When asked about his parents’ reaction to his 'gay' love, Lalit claims that his parents have always been very supportive of all the decisions he has taken till now.
Says he, "My parents have always supported me and stood by me… They know about our relationship. I told them about it. They know that there is a man (Gudda) in my life."
Incidentally, Lalit is a trained boxer and before becoming a model, he practiced boxing at a local club in the Capital. As of now, he is pursuing B Com Honours from Delhi University via correspondence. India's top designer Rohit hails from a wealthy family and has studied at St Stephen’s College in Delhi. Be it their diverse family or educational backgrounds, love sure does conquer everything.
Colourful love
Talking about the most romantic thing the couple does regularly, Lalit says, "We like going together for a lot of parties. There are times when we make sudden plans and set out for a long drive or maybe a dinner outside. Sometimes, we call friends over for a party at home. In fact, everyday, we do something different."
For this couple, love means being there for one another and supporting each other like family. Lalit talks passionately about his lover Gudda. "He's someone who takes care of me. He gives me a lot of love and treats me like his own child. He teaches me and also scolds me at times. He explains to me what is right and wrong. Rohit is like my mother, father, sister, brother, lover - all rolled into one,” confesses Lalit.
When asked about his reaction to Lalit's immense love for him, Rohit says he feels the same. In fact, he initially laughs and then says, "Love is a very wonderful thing. There is love and there is love and there is more love. It's like loving a mother, loving a brother, loving a sister, loving a friend. Love encompasses everything. Love in any way, from anyone, is a wonderful gift from God.
